They even provide dinner (confirm that - it isn't mentioned in the website or article below) and maybe a cool shirt. However, now I know more - the classes are a very good public relations "face" for the County administration, but as we have published here, not all is well managed. For instance, in this bad economy, this is the kind of pr project that businesses would postpone for 1-2 years.
In comparison, the County has 5+ people in public relations, but their budget is about 1/3 that of the School District, and the School District doesn't even have one pr person. (In my opinion, the School District needs at least one pr person, but their board has resisted that idea.)

Lake County Citizens Academy
TAVARES - The county is offering free classes for anyone who wants to learn the ins and outs of county government.
The spring program of the Lake County Citizens Academy will run from March 5 to April 23.
The academy will offer an overview of all aspects of county government.
The classes will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays at various locations throughout Lake.
The schedule for the academy:
*March 5 -- Lake County government overview.
*March 12 -- Internal offices of Lake government.
*March 19 -- Public safety.
*March 26 --Community services.
*April 2 -- Growth management and conservation and compliance.
*April 9 -- Public works.
*April 16 -- Environmental utilities.
*April 23 -- Tourism and business relations.
