renewing this tax. Share it with your taxpayer friends.
Lake County voters will be asked to vote on Nov. 3 "For" or "Against" the
renewal of an $800-million, fifteen year one penny sales tax that goes to
the County, Schools, and Cities for Capital spending. This tax has existed
for 30years, and the renewal will give it another 15 years life.
The supporters of this tax have raised $25-50,000 to convince you to vote
FOR, while reducing rules so that the tax will generate $650-800-million in
a slush fund without much oversight.
You can already find my list of 10+ Reasons to Vote AGAINST the tax HERE
- I just updated it to add more
reasons. I am not against taxes, but this tax is has no proper oversight
and would allow the receiving government agencies to sell bonds and run up
huge debt. Florida has very few guidelines for ensuring tax spending via
sales taxes like this is specific, accountable, professionally documented,
transparent and audited annually by an independent auditor. The tax needs
to be reworded and added to the Nov., 2016 ballot with supporting ordinances
to fix the weaknesses I describe in my list. Don't give a bowl of
$800-million to government agencies without adequate spending rules and
oversight.

Forum on extending 1-cent sales tax in Lake
By Debbie Manis Staff Writer
The League of Women Voters The Villages/Tri-County Area will host a forum
about renewing the local-option penny sales tax at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at
Lees-burg Public Library, 100 E. Main St.
The event is in advance of a Nov. 3 referendum in which voters are being
asked whether to extend the tax for 15 years, which expires Dec. 31, 2017.
The tax allows for 7 percent tax on most purchases in the county, as
opposed to the state tax of 6 percent. The 1-cent tax, which is divided
among the county, school district and Lake's14 municipalities, is collected
on every dollar spent by both residents and visitors who purchase goods in
the county.
The moderator will be Lucille Espey-Francis. Speakers include Lake County
School Board member Bill Mathias, Lake County Commissioner Tim Sullivan and
Vance Jochim, a conservative blogger.
The public is invited to the free event.
