CRT in Lake County, FL Schools is BANNED!
In August, the Supt. of Lake County schools, Diane Kornegay announced a District policy in a memo to employees that teaching CRT (Critical Race Theory) would not be allowed at the District.
She repeated that policy last night, Oct. 19, 2021, at the Lake County Republicans monthly meeting while giving an update on school issues in Lake County.
Below is the August email on CRT, masks & quarantining she sent to all teachers: It covers some other issues like optional masks and Covid-19 quarantining, as well. Additionally, at the meeting, she also said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has prohibited forced quarantining at the home of students who only had contact with another student or teacher found to have a Covid-19 positive test result.
At last night's meeting, she said when teachers asked how to define CRT content, she said the students should never know the biases or political parties the teachers favored.
This memo was received from school district staff on Oct. 20. In this post, I have included the attachments that were mentioned in the memo at the bottom of this document.

Subject: Important Information for Employees
Welcome Back,
Welcome to a new school year. One, that begins yet again with challenges and opportunities. As we have shown time and time again here in Lake County, in spite of the challenges and in spite of the things that may divide us, we work together in the best interest of our children.
Per the Governor’s Executive Order, the District adopted a “mask optional” policy for students and adults. However, masks are encouraged. Attached, you will find our safety protocols. These are the same protocols that were in place last year with the exception of the mask policy and a few minor changes to allow individual schools to make some collective decisions.
Regarding quarantining, there are discussions taking place at the state level between the Department of Education and the State Department of Health about who has to quarantine and for how long one must quarantine. The safety protocols will be amended to reflect whatever directive we receive and I will keep you informed about the changes. (UPDATE -see our introduction above, which provides an update to this earlier memo that quarantining is now no longer required - vj.)
Here at home, the district team is working with LCEA and SEIU on behalf of all teachers and support staff to establish COVID leave policies. This information will be coming to you as soon as possible but until then, we will work with anyone impacted individually.
Over the summer, I’m sure that everyone followed the discussions and debates across the country regarding Critical Race Theory (CRT). As a result, the Florida State Board of Education adopted State Board Rule 6A-1.094124 that prohibits the teaching of CRT and what teachers can and cannot do in regards to the teaching of particular topics. You will find the specifics of the Rule in the attached document entitled Required Instruction Directive. I ask that all staff review the document and ensure adherence to the Rule.
Further, I want to make you aware that on the front page of the district website, you will find a link entitled “Challenged Materials”. According to Florida Statute 1006.283 teachers and all community stakeholders may question any instructional materials being used if they believe that the material or resource is in violation of any portion of Florida Statute 1003.42 – Required Instruction or Florida Statute 1006.31.
This would include the teaching of CRT.
If you have any concerns about materials provided for your course and believe that it violates any of the above Florida statutes, I’d ask that you first share your concerns with your school administrator and should you like to request a district review, please do so using the link on the website. Please also share this information with any parent or community member who may also wish to challenge the use of particular text or resource. Concerns are resolved when we talk and work together to develop a common understanding.
As I’ve told you before, the district team and I are here to support you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us should you have questions, concerns, ideas and solutions. Together, we will make this new year a success for every child and together, we got this!
