1-2 weeks ago I sent some FiscalRangers.com followers AND Lake County, FL School District leaders an early examination of how artificial intelligence and tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Dall-E2 can affect the K-12 education system.
So this article is written as a strategy recommendation to the Lake County, FL School Districts, and any School District or college in the US
Now the discussion and use of artificial intelligence is ramping up even more in Google and YouTube searches, filling technical YouTube videos on all the uses. I finally found a video showing how AI (ChatGPT) could disrupt the education field and be used to develop course lesson plans even using an Education industry methodology. The video is further below.
Artists are freaking out about losing work to artificial intelligence-created art using Dall-e2 or midjourney. https://www. creativebloq.com/news/how-to- use-dall-e
Here is a sample of AI art generated by Dall-e2 (named after Salvador Dali).
Medical students show how they use it to do research papers to diagnose medical ailments (which need to be verified since ChatGPT does not have info past 2021 and does not provide citations or sources for info). https://youtu.be/ ZLdlqu2dvtQ
Lawyers are showing how they use it to DISRUPT the legal profession and analyze legal cases. Wait until they get access to the Lexis Nexis or other legal databases. https://youtu.be/ xGcAi2uZrlo
In my field of internal audit, they are using it to write up audit programs, which are the steps to audit an area like purchasing. They also will be using it to audit organization databases, providing query instructions for researching quality of data.
Poor English speakers are using it to write papers, speeches, emails, etc. I would expect they may use it for entrance exams. One video showed how a student used it to take a graduate-level exam "at home". ChatGTP wrote the responses faster than the student could think, by outlining the topic or type.
Programmers are using it to use natural language instructions to develop code in languages like Excel or Python but may need to detect errors. This video shows how to use AI to develop Python code AND automate Excel worksheets. https://youtu.be/ A4gYAKry7P0
AND, this video is from a long-time teacher/professor showing how to use ChatGPT to create lesson plans using the BOPPPS model. https://youtu.be/VCwj39Cr8x4
However, some school districts are afraid of AI. New York City schools banned the use of ChatGPT by teachers and students, due to a lack of citations and possible errors not caught by the users. The professor discusses the need for plagiarism-checking tools to compare student answers to the internet to verify they are not copied. https://youtu.be/_LfdGIjxH5M
I suggest you search Automate "XXX" with ChatGPT to see what I mean on a subject or profession of interest to you.
Note: Current limitations are OpenAI says no one under the age of 18 can get an account to use ChatGPT. Do you believe that? And ChatGPT does not provide citations of the sources of their answers or provide data later than 2021. it does not access the internet (YET).
To deal with this fast emerging tool, Lake County, FL School District should:
1) Create a committee of TECH-savvy teachers to research the issues and how to deal with ChatGTP and AI applications and how to weave it into all curriculums as a tool.
2) My recommendation is to adopt a future-oriented philosophy to embrace this tool, but develop a method to deal with tech-avoiding instructors or staff and educate users about the limitations which will go away in the future. I can still remember when I was at a 40-plant firm that moved accounting from manual to computerized spreadsheets, and they had to let about 40% of plant bookkeepers go because they could not, or would not learn the new technology.
3) Seriously consider embedding AI and the use of ChatGPT into each class as a tool to solve problems while acknowledging current limitations. By doing this, LCSD could become the DESTINATION school district of choice for parents who want their kids to learn future-proofing tools like AI, and not old tech or skills.
Conclusion - The excitement over future uses of AI is BIG, and LCSD and other school districts and colleges should embrace and understand it, not ignore it. I think it is more important than learning algebra. And, ALL the enthusiastic commenters about AI I have seen have been male. Will females spend the time to learn this tech or teach it?
If you don't believe me, enter this search query "use Dall-e2 or midjourney to create art designs for T-shirts" in YouTube and scroll down and read the names. I chose that topic because in my opinion, more women than men seemed interested in graphic design. However, only one female was listed and she talked about Canva, which is a manual art design tool and not AI-based. ALL of the rest of the many videos were by males.
Will LCSD and educators step up to the AI challenge? Or ignore it until some savvy Charter schools start emphasizing AI as a core skill they teach, and drain government public schools of AI savvy students?
